It makes sense that the holiday season on Nantucket is a galaxy of events so steeped in tradition and community spirit that newbies on the island (like me) start hearing about them months and months and MONTHS in advance.

From the Festival of Trees to Stroll, Nantucket is washed in the spirit of camaraderie and volunteerism, jollity and helping-handedness around this time. As for red tickets? A few weeks ago I did not know what they were and now I’m absolutely obsessed with them. (Yes, our Seconds Shop has plenty to hand out when you make purchases!)

Here at Fairwinds, we are kicking off the season with our own enthusiastic participation in #GivingTuesday—this year on December 3. (It’s always on the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving, Black Friday, and Cyber Monday.) Remember that #GivingTuesday is an international day of giving, almost entirely driven by social media, that taps into the tremendous generosity of human beings. People who wish to support their favorite non-profits seem to love the celebratory feel of the day. Last year, $400,000,000 was raised in 24 hours worldwide!

From 12:01a.m. to 11:59 p.m. on the 3rd, all gifts made to Fairwinds will be increased (by an as-yet-undisclosed amount), thanks to two generous matching challenge donors: Maria and George Roach and Jane and Charles Forman. (We are so grateful to them. Pass it on!) Keep your eye on our social media posts leading up to and on the #GivingTuesday so that your gift can make an extra big impact, supporting the mental health services Fairwinds provides on Nantucket.

Starting on December 5, Fairwinds is “taking over” Olivela at 25 Centre Street. Any shopping that happens there from the 5th through Stroll weekend will benefit Nantucket’s Counseling Center. You can shop for a cause at Olivela any time of the year and specify Fairwinds as the agency you wish to benefit. But the great thing about Stroll Olivela_Mark-black 2week is that 20% of the proceeds of every sale will help support our walk-in Urgent Behavioral Healthcare Clinic and other free services. Thank you, Olivela!

Make sure to come by and visit us at Stroll. Fairwinds will have its photo booth operating again this year, and the Seconds Shop will be on hand with an amazing array of items for sale, from fab furs to designer dresses and more. Don’t forget to say hi!

Whether you are dropping off that tweed coat you no longer wear at our Seconds Shop or clicking on our “donate now” link on #GivingTuesday, you are participating in the spirit of giving that seems to infuse the island at this time of year. Fairwinds gives too—clinical services to anyone who needs support and care but cannot afford it, is without insurance, or is underinsured. We all give in our own way, as best we can.

Thank you—to our supporters and friends— for your generous hearts.
